1. Popular Marches

From 11 to 13 June, Praça do Infante becomes the stage for the traditional Popular Marches, an event that unites the local community and numerous associations in a vibrant celebration of Portuguese popular culture. Over the course of three days, the city comes alive with parades filled with colour, music, and traditional attire, unfolding in an atmosphere of conviviality and heritage that continues to shape the identity of local festivities throughout the Algarve.

2. Candlelit Cultures Market  (Mercado de Culturas à Luz das Velas)

This year’s edition of the Candlelit Cultures Market will centre on the theme of “Lusophone Cultural Identity,” an event devoted to celebrating the shared heritage of Portuguese-speaking cultures. As is tradition, intricate candlelit designs will illuminate the main streets of Lagoa, creating a distinctive visual landscape across the town. The evenings will come alive with entertainment, live concerts, traditional food and drink stalls, and vibrant street performances.

The Candlelit Cultures Market will run from 2 to 5 July 2026.

3. Afronation

This year, the Afronation Festival celebrates its 6th anniversary at Praia da Rocha in Portimão, presenting a lineup filled with internationally renowned artists. Performers such as Burna Boy, Tyla, Asake, and Wizkid have already confirmed their participation, setting the stage for the 2026 programme. As is customary, the festival promises an immersive experience of music, entertainment, and Afro-inspired rhythms that will sweep across the sands of one of the Algarve’s most iconic beaches. Tickets are now available.

The Afronation Festival will take place from 3 to 5 July 2026.

4. Sardine Festival (Festival da Sardinha)

As its name suggests, this festival is dedicated to the sardine, a fish deeply cherished throughout the summer season. In Portimão, a selection of local restaurants will be featured, serving the traditional essentials: grilled sardines, boiled potatoes, and Algarvian salad. Within the food and beverage areas, regional sweets also take centre stage, alongside displays of local crafts and live musical performances. Over several days, visitors will be able to attend a variety of concerts set against the scenic backdrop of the city’s riverside.

The Sardine Festival will take place along the riverside area of Portimão, with dates and programme still to be confirmed.

5. FATACIL

It is almost impossible not to have heard of FATACIL, the major annual event held every August. If that is the case, it is worth knowing that it stands as the largest fair of handicrafts, tourism, agriculture, commerce, and industry in the Algarve. Throughout the days of the event, visitors are invited to explore a wide variety of exhibition stands showcasing artisanal crafts, regional gastronomy, national tourism, and contributions from numerous regions across the country.

The most eagerly awaited moments are, without doubt, the evening concerts, which bring together artists from a broad spectrum of musical genres. This year’s lineup features Tony Carreira, M80, Hybrid Theory, Vizinhos, Plutónio, Sara Correia, Quim Barreiros, Richie Campbell, and concluding with Nininho Vaz Maia.

FATACIL will take place from 21 to 30 August 2026.

6. Arte Doce Fair and Competition

The Arte Doce Fair and Competition returns for its 37th edition, taking place from 22 to 26 July, and continues to stand as one of the most iconic highlights of the Algarve summer. Once again, the event celebrates the region’s traditional confectionery, local craftsmanship, and a diverse musical programme that draws thousands of visitors to Lagos each year.

The 2026 programme features performances by Marisa Liz (22 July), Matias Damásio (23 July), Dino D’Santiago (24 July), Carlão (25 July), and Ana Moura (26 July), promising evenings filled with vibrant entertainment and a rich variety of musical styles throughout the week.

Further information is available on the Lagos municipal website.

7. Banho 29

This stands as one of the most eagerly awaited events for the people of Lagos and for many visitors who return each year to witness this historic reenactment. Tradition holds that a sea bath should be taken on the night of 28 to 29 August. It is believed that a single dip on this night is equivalent to twenty-nine, carrying with it a sense of renewal and purification.

The event symbolises the closing of summer, recalling a time when agricultural workers would travel from inland areas to the coast and perform this ritual under the cover of night. In the present day, it has evolved into a festive celebration, where music and traditional delicacies fill the streets of Lagos. A concert by national artist Tanya is scheduled in Lagos, alongside additional performances to be announced in Praia da Luz.

Further information about the event is available on the municipal website.

8. MotoGP 2026

The world’s most prestigious motorcycle championship returns to Portugal. The finest riders on the planet, competing on the fastest machines, reach speeds exceeding 350 km per hour. Keep an eye out for ticket releases for this race, which, although not held in the summer season, remains an unmissable highlight of the sporting calendar.

Secure your tickets for this major sporting event in Portimão, taking place from 20 to 22 November 2026.
