If one of the main reasons you travel is to learn about the people and their traditions, the gastronomic tourism in the Algarve is an excellent way to learn about the region's cuisine's culture, traditions, and history. Local markets, where the richest flavours of fruit, vegetables, meat, seafood, and more are available every day, are one of the most exciting venues to learn this expertise.

On your next visit to Estrela da Luz, get up early and discover the colours and smells that run through the aisles of the following local markets in the Algarve:

Avenida Municipal Market

Opening hours: Monday to Saturday, from 7.00 am to 2.00 pm.

Location: Avenida dos Descobrimentos, Lagos.

Distance from Estrela da Luz: This market is 12 minutes from Estrela da Luz.

Get up early to find the freshest produce in Lagos. This is the city's oldest market, and it is situated on a busy thoroughfare where both visitors and locals pass throughout the day.

The Avenida market is spread over three floors. On the first floor, you will find delicacies from the sea, from the fish of our coast to seafood and the famous sardines. Ask the shopkeepers for tips to prepare a divine lunch for your family in the Estrela da Luz apartments.

Side dishes for lunch and fruit for dessert are available on the second floor. The majority of the manufacturers in this market are local, so you'll find a wide selection of fruits from the Algarve region.

The third and final storey is a restaurant with a riverside view. The artwork of a local artist and a poem by the Portuguese Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen, an enduring lover of this city, may be found on the staircase that connects these three stories.

Viv'o Mercado

Opening hours: Every Wednesday from 4 pm to 8 pm.

Location: Vasco da Gama street - In front of the Town Hall building.

Distance from Estrela da Luz: This market is 11 minutes from Estrela da Luz.

It is a market for organic products and handicrafts made with love by Lagos residents and the surrounding area. The market takes place outside, with stalls selling fruit, vegetables, spices, sweets, and handicrafts.

In this innovative market, you'll find Viv'o Mercado-approved brands selling mostly organic products. There is also a section for organic products and another for conventional products.

Before the pandemic took over our lives, you could listen to live music, take the kids to an entertainment area, or find food stalls. These three areas are still temporarily closed.

A place dedicated to fish and all delicacies from the sea. If you are an eternal lover of the fresh and characteristic flavours of the Algarve, get up before seven in the morning, take a typical Algarve "alcofa de empreita" (palm tree braid bag), and choose your lunch of sea bass, sea bream or sardines.

At this market, which is located in a building in the city centre, you can also watch some exhibitions by Lagos' creative community.

Levante Market

Location: Lagos Sports Complex car park.

Distance from Estrela da Luz: This market is 12 minutes from Estrela da Luz.

It was established in 1974 to assist small agricultural producers in selling their products. It is also known as Reforma Agrária (Agrarian Reform), and there are many healthy and organic products available to round out your holiday basket. Don't forget to look at the fresh flowers available from these vendors.

This market's location is open air and only temporary while we are still under the grip of a pandemic, so that you may shop while remaining safe.
